UXU - Certified Accessibility Specialist

Description

If you’re ready to become a genuine champion for accessible user experiences (accessibility), you’re in the right place. In just three days, you’ll gain the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to kickstart or elevate your career in UX, with a strong focus on designing and testing for true inclusion.

What will you learn throughout this course?

Chapter 1 - Accessibility: What, Why & How, and Your Role as an Accessibility Ambassador:

  • Kick off your journey by discovering why accessibility is more than just a checklist; it’s the foundation of truly inclusive user experiences. Learn how accessible design benefits everyone, from individuals with disabilities to organizations aiming to reach broader audiences and mitigate legal risks. You’ll become familiar with the international standards that govern and shape digital accessibility, including ISO standards, WCAG, as well as (regional and national) laws. You’ll unpack the POUR principles (Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, Robust) and see how they translate into real design decisions. Explore the power of personas, including those with disabilities, and learn how to utilize them to design experiences that cater to real people. By the end, you’ll know what it means to be an accessibility advocate and how to embed inclusive thinking into your organization’s culture and day-to-day practices.

Chapter 2 - Designing & Coding for Accessibility

  • Turn theory into practice! This chapter provides you with the practical skills and confidence to design and build digital products that everyone can use, regardless of their ability. Learn how to apply WCAG in the real world, from providing meaningful alt text and captions, to designing flexible layouts, clear color contrast, and text that reflows beautifully.
  • You’ll discover how to:
    • Design content everyone can perceive, whether they rely on screens, readers, or captions.
    • Build interfaces that work seamlessly with keyboards, assistive technology, and alternative input methods.
    • Create websites and apps that are clear and intuitive, with helpful instructions and no unexpected surprises.
    • Code robust, standards-compliant structures that hold up across browsers, devices, and assistive tools.
  • You’ll walk away ready to create digital experiences that don’t just pass the test, they truly include everyone.

Chapter 3 - Accessibility in Every Role

  • Accessibility is a team sport, not a solo mission. In this chapter, you’ll discover how every role, from developer to designer, marketer to QA, manager to content creator, plays a vital part in making digital products work for everyone.
  • You’ll get practical, role-specific insights:
    • Developers: Learn to build clean frameworks, straightforward navigation, and accessible forms that remove barriers.
    • Visual Designers: Master layouts, typography, and color contrast that make your designs usable for all.
    • Content Creators: Write plain, clear copy, craft descriptive headings, and make your images, videos, and audio truly accessible.
    • Digital Marketers: Create campaigns that don’t leave anyone behind — with inclusive visuals, clear text, and accessible links.
    • QA Specialists (Testers): Build accessibility checks into your test plans, utilizing both automation and human insight to identify what tools may miss.
    • Managers & Product Owners: Embed accessibility into your strategy, user stories, KPIs, and everyday processes, so it’s part of your culture, not an afterthought.
  • By the end, you’ll see how collaboration across every discipline is what makes digital inclusion real.

Chapter 4 - Digital Accessibility Testing: From Automation to Human Insight

  • This final chapter provides you with the tools to test like a pro, combining the efficiency of automation with the critical perspective that only humans can bring.
  • You’ll master how to:
    • Use the best automation tools (like axe-core, WAVE, Lighthouse) to catch quick wins and common issues.
    • Know where automation stops and how to dig deeper with manual testing for aspects such as alt text quality, meaningful link text, logical keyboard navigation, and user experience for assistive technology users.
    • Simulate real user experiences with screen readers and color blindness simulators to build empathy and spot hidden barriers.
    • Apply the POUR principles in hands-on testing, so you’re not just ticking boxes, but truly ensuring your products work for everyone, across devices, browsers, and technologies.
  • You’ll complete this chapter equipped to integrate automation, simulation, and human testing for real-world results, creating digital experiences that withstand scrutiny and deliver on inclusion.
