- The selection and handling of substrates used during card production
- Common material-related defects and their possible causes
Section 2: Inks
- The composition and properties of inks used in card printing
- The role of pigments, binders, solvents, and additives
- Ink drying and curing through processes such as evaporation, oxidation, penetration, and radiation curing
- The relationship between ink solids, wet deposits, and dried coating thickness
- Factors affecting ink adhesion, colour, durability, and print performance
Section 3: Adhesives
- The purpose and properties of adhesives used in card construction
- Different adhesive systems and their suitability for particular materials and applications
- The influence of temperature, pressure, time, and surface preparation on adhesive performance
- Common bonding problems and methods for identifying their causes
- The relationship between adhesives and subsequent manufacturing processes
Section 4: Printing
- Printing processes commonly used in card manufacturing
- The principles of screen printing and other relevant printing methods
- The relationship between screen mesh, ink deposit, solids content, and dried coating thickness
- Registration, colour consistency, coverage, and print quality
- Typical printing defects, their causes, and possible corrective actions
Section 5: Collation
- The preparation and arrangement of printed sheets and card components before lamination
- The positioning and alignment of materials within a card construction
- The handling of films, overlays, cores, and other card components
- The effects of tension, dimensional stability, and material properties during collation
- Common collation errors and their impact on the finished product
Section 6: Lamination
- The principles of platen lamination used in card manufacturing
- The influence of temperature, pressure, and processing time on laminate quality
- The effect of product thickness, core construction, and material type on lamination schedules
- The differences between split-core and single-core constructions
- Typical lamination defects, including distortion, delamination, poor bonding, and surface imperfections
Section 7: Die-Cutting
- The principles and equipment used to cut laminated sheets into individual cards
- Card dimensions, corner radii, alignment, and cutting tolerances
- The effects of tooling condition, material construction, and machine settings on cut quality
- Common die-cutting defects and their possible causes
- Methods used to maintain consistent card dimensions and edge quality
Section 8: Standards and Testing
- The role of industry standards and specifications in card manufacturing
- Testing methods used to evaluate card dimensions, construction, strength, durability, and performance
- The measurement of properties such as thickness, tensile strength, and elongation
- The interpretation of product and manufacturing tolerances
- The identification, investigation, and prevention of quality problems
Business Outcomes
Holders of the ICMA™ ACE-M certificate can…
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of the complete card manufacturing process.
- Explain how materials and production stages affect the quality and performance of finished cards.
- Recognize the relationships between upstream and downstream card manufacturing processes.
- Apply knowledge of plastics, inks, adhesives, printing, collation, lamination, and die-cutting in a manufacturing environment.
- Interpret relevant specifications, measurements, tolerances, and testing results.
- Identify common manufacturing defects and evaluate their possible causes.
- Support consistent production quality and more informed technical decision-making.
- Communicate more effectively with colleagues, suppliers, customers, and other card-industry professionals.
In general, an ICMA™ ACE-M certificate holder has acquired the knowledge needed to understand card manufacturing as an integrated process rather than as a series of isolated production activities. The certification provides independent recognition of card-manufacturing expertise and supports continued professional development within the global card industry.
Target Audience
The ICMA™ Advanced Card Education – Manufacturing (ACE-M) qualification is aimed at professionals involved in the manufacture, production, quality control, or technical support of cards and card-related products.
It is relevant for individuals working with card materials, inks, adhesives, printing, collation, lamination, die-cutting, product testing, manufacturing standards, and quality assurance.
This includes roles such as production operators, technicians, engineers, quality professionals, process specialists, production supervisors, technical sales professionals, product managers, suppliers, consultants, and other employees working within the card manufacturing industry.
The qualification is also suitable for professionals who work with card manufacturers, material suppliers, equipment providers, testing laboratories, or other organizations within the card production supply chain and who want to develop a broader understanding of the complete manufacturing process.
The ICMA™ ACE-M qualification is appropriate for both experienced card-industry professionals seeking independent recognition of their knowledge and individuals who are building their expertise in card manufacturing.
Requirements
Candidates for the ICMA™ Advanced Card Education – Manufacturing (ACE-M) exam should have a minimum of two years of professional experience in the card industry.
Relevant experience may include working in one or more of the following areas:
- Card manufacturing or production
- Card personalization or service-bureau operations
- Materials, equipment, or other products and services supplied to the card industry
Candidates are strongly encouraged to prepare using the official ICMA™ ACE-M learning materials and to complete relevant training before taking the exam. Practical experience with card materials and manufacturing processes will also support preparation for the technical and calculation-based examination questions.
The ICMA™ ACE-M designation is a standalone certification. Candidates are not required to hold the ICMA™ ACE-P or ICMA™ ACE-A designation before taking the ACE-M exam.
